What is Scratch ART?

Scratchboard or "scraperboard" is a paper or board surface that is finely and uniformly layered with clay (usually white) and then coated with dense black India ink.
The technique is simple - using a blade or stylus scratch into the top layer removing the black and exposing the white under layer. This technique is well suited for fine detail work and is favoured by many wildlife artists. (description taken from Curry's on-line web site)
I was inspired after visiting Australian artist, Judy Edwards web site. If you have a few minutes, goggle her name and you will be surprised and awed, as much as I was!!

Just finished matting and framing 5 Scratch Art Pieces- all art selling for $150 each:

 "Birds, birds, and more birds"

I challenged my Artistic self.........and I did it!

"My Lily" in 4 different Mediums!
This past summer, I challenged myself to paint this photo reference in 4 different mediums. The positive image of these white lilies drew me in and inspired me to paint a watercolour. Then this spring these same Oriental Casa Blanca Lilies came up and I decided to do an outdoor oil painting on wood. Next year the plan is to set up an easel with my oil painting on top of these blooming lilies at my front door to invite my friends and family. In July, I experimented with an acrylic on canvas. Today, I finished framing my watercolour & batik on rice paper and I am thrilled with the results!

Introducing ......

"Forest Floor" #697 Watercolour & Pen $350
I have always been inspired to paint the intriguing knotting and knurls of the tree trunks at McGowan Falls. I marvel how these roots grow alongside the rocky terrain.
This summer, I took a break in teaching and new workshops now begins in September.

Show was a great success!

Every year, we meet old friends and make
new acquiantances. The show had a great
variety of art (watercolours, oils, acrylics,
jewellery, pottery, metal work, etc...)

The extra work was well worth it and returned home with 3 less paintings!

I like to thank my friend Tina Concetta Revie for taking a picture today at the Grand Opening of the Owen Sound Banners.  I was unable to attend because I was teaching a watercolour/batik workshop of the "Chantry Island Lighthouse" (off-site workshop through the Southampton Art School). INTRODUCTION of 2012 SERIES "Lighthouses near & far" in Watercolour & Batik

I have added another painting to my series in the Painting Gallery. The name of this new painting "Thames River Mouth Lighthouse at Lake St Clair". Last January, my brother and his wife took us to visit this lighthouse of our childhood. There was a log jam and debris preventing the Thames River to flow into Lake St Clair.  This lighthouse brought back childhood memories of weekend summer fishing at the dock with my family.
I am enjoying this new technique of mix media using watercolours, pen, wax on rice paper!

What's special about this series is that the paintings will combine my love of wax and watercolours.

This particular painting of the Kincardine Lighthouse was created using watercolours, wax, and
pen on rice paper.
Painting on rice paper have been around for over 2,000 years, and were established in China, Japan and Korea.  This ancient method of painting requires considerable practice and patience.  As I was learning, I recorded step-by-step instructions, so that I may one day teach a workshop to other artists.  I am planning to paint a few more lighthouses to feel more confident in this technique.
I do love the final effect and transparency of the final painting!

Check out my Painting Gallery as I introduce more paintings in this series!

Miniature Artist trading Cards

Artist trading cards are miniature pieces of art that are traded around the world. Artist create, trade and collect art at "swap" events, either in person or online. It is a great way to meet other artists and share your work.  The only official rule is the size: 2.5"x 3.5".
How did the movement start?
In 1997, M. Vanci Stirnemann, a Swiss artist, created 1200 cards by hand as part of an exhibit.  On the last day, he invited others to create their own cards and trade with him during the closing reception.  After that, the movement took off as other artists organized major "swap" events!  Today, there are swaps in almost every major city around the world.

Would you like to trade with me?
They are fun to do & trade with other artists!

Weekend Art Retreat at Dragonfly Ridge

Artists were invited back by Lin Souliere & Carl Bell for a weekend art retreat in Lion's Head, in celebration of their 5 years of Guest Cabins.
Even though, the weather did not co-operate, the torrential rains and 70km winds did not damper our paintings! Lin's art studio provided a great place to paint, share stories and enjoy more than one glass of wine.

Thanks Lin & Carl for your hospitality.... Bev, Janet & Nancy
